Problem Statement:
The EMUiNVENT InvenTeam, located at Eastern Michigan University, identified that community-dwelling persons aged 60 and above may not be able to move or change positions without assistance. This loss of independence results in an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle with detrimental effects. Depending on someone to change body positions reduces their physical activity, causing far-reaching medical (such as heart disease, obesity, and increased blood pressure), psychological (depression, sadness), and financial (caregiver costs) consequences. As the American elderly population is projected to double from 52 million to 95 million (from 2018 to 2060), a solution to lessen or eliminate this dependence will be essential for maintaining a good quality of life for society and keeping a healthy workforce.
