Autonomous Pothole Remediation Device and Material for Houston Roads
Computing and Telecommunications

Houston, Texas
2015-2016

The KIPP Sunnyside InvenTeam invented a semi-autonomous robot and an asphalt patch compound to repair cracks and potholes in roadways. The system minimizes material waste and road repair worker hazard while providing longer-lasting fills. The robot consists of three main subsystems: drive train, material heater and mixer, and extruder. The drive train is controlled by one worker, instead of an entire work crew. The mixer and heating element evenly mixes the repair material, which lasts longer than standard cold patch asphalt due its flexible and hydrophobic nature. Finally, this novel material is extruded into cracks and potholes for a long-lasting improvement to filling potholes.
