Retractable awning to prevent and clear snow build up for Massachusetts schools
Computing and Telecommunications

Norwood, Massachusetts
2015-2016

The Norwood High School InvenTeam invented an autonomous snow-clearing awning for roofs. The awning’s ability to deploy autonomously during a snowstorm saves the facility money on labor, reduces water and weight damage, and prevents the need for workers to clear snow in dangerous conditions. Snow clearing is accomplished with retractable legs and an ejection method that pushes snow off the awning. The awning is powered by a DC car battery and features redundant pressure sensors and a Kevlar® fabric to ensure proper functioning in heavy storm conditions.
