The Newton North High School InvenTeam invented a pedestrian alert system to be used in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to alert drivers of crossing pedestrians and help pedestrians safely cross the road. The invention incorporates a dual-sensor method that calculates the arrival time of oncoming vehicles. The invention is culturally nonintrusive and was designed with the aesthetics of Ethiopian art and architecture in mind. The system is powered entirely by solar energy for minimal environmental impact. The crossing system uses 25 W, while the car sensor uses 3.3 W. The entire system will cost $3,700.
