Self-balancing recumbent tricycle
Consumer Devices

The Lynden High School InvenTeam invented a hydraulic suspension system for a recumbent tricycle for riders with physical limitations. The tricycle's automatically controlled leaning capabilities are not currently available on the market. The speed, acceleration and inclination is monitored by an Arduino chip, which opens and closes valves within the hydraulic system to allow the tricycle to lean or be stable depending on the speed. A hydraulic pump pushes the tricycle to an upright position if it is at an angle when it comes to a stop. As the rider's balance and skill level increase, the tricycle can lean up to 25 degrees, allowing the rider to exercise the core muscle groups. The tricycle weighs less than 35 lb.
