‘Tis the Season to be Building

This December, the team attended our first Webinar, where we got to see and meet other teams across the country and voice any concerns and questions. From the start, Tony Perry addressed that the theme of the month was to “Build, build, build!” We updated the other teams about our progress, such as what parts we purchased and received, and what we were planning to do in the coming weeks (articulated in November blog).

In mid-December, we established a new connection for a bus donation from HISD, received our official polos from Lemelson-MIT, and filled out a Google form for tentative attendees to EurekaFest. We continued to reach out to Houston Public Media, the Houston Independent School District, and professionals in the energy industry we believed could help us fundraise for the trip. Due to conflicting schedules, we had to push our Mid-Grant Technical Review to February 28 at 5 PM. Our prospective attendees for the MGTR include school administration, the HISD School Board, and anyone in the Houston community.

Over the winter break, the Technical Team met up to work on the mechanical and electrical components of our project. They hooked the battery to another device (it works) and found out that the thermoelectric modules don’t produce enough energy to reasonably charge the battery. They also found out that we need a new type of connector, and some lower gauge wire in order for the battery to be hooked up to the modules or the viscometer.

During January, we hope to complete our first prototype and get ready for the MGTR.
