Spring Forward!

In March, we walked in the Oakland Park Youth Day Parade on the 10th. After walking, we spent the rest of our afternoon selling paper-beaded jewelry to raise money for EurekaFest. The paper-beaded jewelry were donated to us through Ms. Fran, who is a community volunteer that works with our finance team to fundraise. Ms. Mabour was honored as Grand Marshal and received a glass plaque to congratulate our Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam.

Our team went on an enjoyable and educational field trip to Florida Power and Light’s (FPL) headquarters in Juno Beach, FL. We were given a tour of the facility and had the opportunity to go on FPL’s rooftop where multiple solar panel tests were conducted. Afterwards, our members headed to the Palm Beach State Community College and took a tour of the college’s engineering lab. There we met a professor who showed us different machines the college students used in their assignments and the college’s 3D printer.
The team participated in another debate meet this March in which we sold items such as pizza, chips, chocolates, and candy. We increased our sales at this debate night compared to our last and are expecting a bigger crowd next month. While selling at the Debate Night, our Blaze Pizza Night flyers were distributed to our customers and chaperons of the Broward County Schools Debate community.

We held our Blaze Pizza Fundraiser Night on Friday, March 23, we used social media to spread the word and invite our community members. We had a great turnout that consisted of many customers from our community that included our family, friends, and Oakland Park Kiwanis members. We reached out to two other restaurants in hope of more family nights.

The engineering team has been working furiously in each meeting to have the prototype before the deadline. They made the Arduino controls work in running two motors at different periods and are refining the motor controls. For testing the motors, our engineers have been recently taking slow-motion videos to measure waves. There is some difficulty in reducing the noise from the device, and they are looking into different insulation such as a fiberglass wall. Our engineering team are also working towards battery saving controls.
During March the communications team worked diligently on advertising for our fundraising events, one of which was at the Oakland Park Youth Day and another of which that was at Blaze pizza in Ft. Lauderdale. Meanwhile, Finance has worked for the past month on ticket management, as well as closely monitoring the fundraising effort. Finance has began research on flights and comparing rates and will continue to finalize flight plans in April.
