CASA GRANDE — With a $10,000 grant, a team of eight Casa Grande Union High School science students hopes to develop a new device that will help control wildfires and protect homes.
The team of students is one of 15 nationwide selected to receive a Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam grant. They’ll use the money to develop a working prototype for an automated wildfire protection system or device that would be activated to protect vulnerable homes or neighborhoods from wildfire. The new invention is based on the foam system currently used by firefighters but the group hopes to create something that is longer-lasting and more durable as well as efficient, aesthetically pleasing and safe.
“It would be used by homeowners and firefighters,” said Chloe Buchanan, who is leading the communications effort for the Casa Grande team.
