e3 Civic High InvenTeam December Blog
Seasons greetings from Guard D-rink™! We excitedly announced to our school that we were named as one of eight 2023-2024 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam finalists on October 24, 2023. A few weeks earlier, our fellow and a few administrators from our school surprised us with the news by throwing handfuls of confetti at us, that kind of hurt. The members of Guard D-rink™ are very proud and thankful to have received this honor and we cannot thank Lemelson-MIT enough for recognizing us for our hard work. We come all the way from e3 Civic High which resides in sunny Downtown San Diego, California. But don’t worry, we don’t all surf, skateboard, or drink iced chai tea lattes. Our group consists of five members, Shessly, Shania, Mikaela, JoAnna, and Desiree. Shessly, Shania, JoAnna, and Desiree currently attend e3 Civic High and Mikaela is an e3 alumni now studying at UCLA.
Our team is currently working on a few things for our project. Shessly and JoAnna have been working on creating a mold for our solution. They plan on using resin to create another version of their prototype with a different material. It definitely has not been easy for them given that neither of them have experience working with silicone. We wish them luck!
Desiree is in charge of the chemical aspect of our project. She has been working on finding different chemicals that our team can work with as high school students and is working closely with our former e3 chemistry teacher to plan a few experiments we can do to test the accuracy of our product. Last but not least, Shania is working on our technology piece with the help from Mikaela. Shania is working to minimize the size of our tech piece and make it more compact to fit our product. Shania and Mikaela meet weekly to discuss this process and how Shania should proceed.
