Passenger-Side Bicyclist Detection System for Cars
Electronics

Monmouth Junction, New Jersey
2014-2015

The South Brunswick High School InvenTeam invented a device to alert drivers of oncoming bicyclists on the passenger side of a car to reduce injuries caused by collisions with opening car doors. Opening car doors have caused 63,000 reported injuries to bicyclists in metropolitan cities in the span of three years. The detection system is attachable and/or detachable to any make/model of vehicle because it fits to the rear windshield. Utilizing two aligned proximity sensors and the time of flight principle, the device can detect bicyclists in the bike lane within 30 feet of the device. Watch their 2015 EurekaFest Video
