The American Passage at Maria Regina High School InvenTeam, invented a “smart” jacket to benefit the safety of pedestrians. There is a threat of injury by vehicles unable to see pedestrians walking where there are no sidewalks and low lighting. The “smart” jacket is equipped with a matrix of over 100 multicolored LEDs which produce signals to indicate the position and status of the pedestrian wearing it to drivers within 55 feet of the pedestrian. Power is provided by a 5 V lithium ion battery recharged by on-board solar patches or USB connections. Control of the LED matrix is via a Bluetooth™ enabled microcontroller managed by a smartphone application.
