Celebration of young inventors at New Covenant School
The New Covenant School, a Christian elementary school in Lexington, MA, successfully integrated Lemelson-MIT (LMIT) invention education curricula at each grade level K-5 in the 2025-2026 school year. On May 5th, they invited LMIT staff to their school for a showcase and celebration of the incredible teachers and student work.
The kindergarten students delved into literacy-based invention learning, reading
books such as Abby Invents Unbreakable Crayons and Where the Wild Things Are to identify problems the main characters faced and how they could solve them with inventions of their own.
The first graders took on the “Bee the Inventor” curriculum, which teaches students about leaf cutter bees - they then constructed their own homes for the bees to help them thrive as important species for pollination.
The second and third graders both completed the “Toy Design” activity guide,
where they interviewed the youngest students in their school to come up with learning toys for their benefit.
The third graders even learned how to use micro:bits to add an interactive element to their toys.
The fourth graders experienced “Light Up Kicks,” a curriculum that allows students to explore footwear from around the world. They incorporated design elements from their own cultural/ethnic backgrounds into their shoe and integrated
circuitry to have it light up.
Lastly, the fifth graders embarked on “Inventing with Empathy,” where students read El Deafo, a biographical graphic novel, about the challenges of wearing hearing devices. Students researched inventions in the deaf community and came up with an early prototype that solves a problem they encounter.
The day culminated with an opportunity for teachers and administrative staff at New Covenant to share feedback with LMIT staff.
