Berlin High School InvenTeam
Problem Statement:
White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) is among the most devastating wildlife diseases of our time, responsible for the deaths of millions of bats across North America. At Berlin High School (Berlin, CT), our Carpe Noctem InvenTeam is inventing and developing a modular, field-deployable tool designed to help insectivorous bats improve their odds of surviving winter until spring’s return. This system is designed to support both bats and their food sources while fostering a safe and clean roosting environment that minimizes the spread of WNS spores. Together, we anticipate that his invention will prove useful for researchers and nature enthusiasts alike, all while helping our flying mammalian friends persist in the era of WNS.
About the 2025-2026 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams:
The 2025-2026 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams were selected by a panel of esteemed judges after several months of researching problems within their community that could be addressed with a technological solution. Teams will continue to learn more about the problems they selected in the first half of the grant year. Technological solutions will be prototyped, tested, and modified in the second half of the grant year. The technological solutions—inventions—will be showcased during EurekaFest in 2026. Team progress can be followed through Inside InvenTeams, a monthly newsletter.
