Josh Siegel

Josh Siegel is a PhD candidate in the Field Intelligence Lab at MIT, where his research focuses on the use of automotive data to optimize vehicle efficiency, performance, and reliability.

Josh’s lifetime love for building robots and restoring cars, fostered while in high school, and his strong appreciation for art and craftsmanship served as the impetus behind his pursuit of next-generation vehicle technology – the “connected car”. Josh founded CarKnow, a startup focused on designing software and hardware to transform vehicle data into exciting new applications and a winner of the MassChallenge / MassIT Government Innovation Prize. This Detroit native founded several startups in addition to CarKnow and holds a patent for a road condition and congestion monitoring smart messaging system.

Josh is committed to introducing students to science, technology and entrepreneurship.  He enjoys teaching and takes great pride in explaining complex ideas and sharing his passion for a topic with eager and interested students.  Josh has mentored teams for the MIT Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies’ Soldier Design competition, partnered with students to teach entrepreneurship and participated in the Edgerton Center’s FixIt clinic, teaching kids and adults how to repair broken products. 

Josh received an SB and SM in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, where his team was the winner of the 2008 Soldier Design Competition Boeing Prize and he was involved with the Electric Vehicle Team and Entrepreneurs Club.
