Detector of paper money denominations for people with impaired vision

The Poolesville High School InvenTeam is building a device to help people with blindness and visual impairment with counting and sorting through paper money. All denominations of U.S. paper currency are the same size, shape, and texture, making it difficult to identify a bill's value without the sense of sight. Current products in the marketplace, such as the iBill scanner and smartphone apps, are highly inefficient as they require a user to perform the task of scanning a bill, folding/marking it or organizing it into a wallet, and then repeating these steps for each individual bill. This whole process can sometimes take a minute or more if a user is handed back multiple bills, and thus, many times such devices end up not being used in purchasing environments. However, this opens up the opportunity for cashiers to take advantage of people with blindness or visual impairment by handing back a lesser amount of change than they claim, as shown in multiple social experiments. Our device aims to streamline the whole process, by accepting a whole stack of bills and automatically counting and sorting them in an efficient manner.
