The Money Sorter

The Poolesville High School InvenTeam invented the Money Sorter to help people with blindness and visual impairment become more independent in handling U.S. paper currency. The Money Sorter identifies and organizes bills in a simple four-step process. First, a user inserts a stack of bills into the intake mechanism. Sensors in the device then detect infrared strips embedded inside each bill to identify its denomination. Next, the innovative and unique sorting mechanism places the bill into compartments of a detachable wallet-like storage container. Finally, the user is informed of the bill's value through auditory output. This whole process takes about 3 seconds per bill to complete, making it efficient to use in a store when receiving change from the cashier. The entire system costs under $200, weighs under one-half pound, and is able to fit in a bag or purse.
