The Oviedo High School InvenTeam will invent a system to protect citrus crops in freezing weather. By combining a solar-powered heater with a transparent thermal blanket, we will develop a device that is portable, reusable, low-cost, and simple to use. Our initial goal is to maintain a fruit temperature that is 2°F to 3°F greater than the outside air temperature, thereby protecting Florida citrus from approximately 50 percent of potentially destructive freezes.
Energy and Environment
We will build a rugged, durable, self-contained water filtration unit that will supply sanitary water to meet the household water needs of a family in the third world, 40 l/day. It will kill or remove bacteria in the water. The filtration unit will have a target annual cost of $20 or less. The unit will not require external fuel or power for operation but may require occasional, modest human power for cleaning
Our watercraft invention is targeted at the current energy and environmental damage from fossil fuel dependence issues. The recreational watercraft we envision will be capable of achieving speeds in excess of 25 mph using renewable electric energy as the power source.
We will invent the Paraplegic Agricultural Lift (PAL), a remote-controlled lift that will provide three axes of motion and be capable of raising a person from ground level to the cab of a combine or other hand-operated equipment. PAL will be able to lift 600 pounds, de-rated at 300 pounds. The electrical system will consist of a remote-control system and a solid-state switching circuit utilizing an N-channel FET, H-bridge with feedback control loops, and include limit switches.
We will invent a wind power generation system for semi-tractor trailer trucks. Our wind turbine, installed on the roof of the truck's cab, will generate electricity while the truck is in motion, and then store that electricity in a battery system for use when the truck is parked. The goal of the project is to provide truck drivers the ability to meet the parked power needs of their cabs without having to idle their engines and burn fossil fuels.
We will invent a portable, handheld water purification device for use by people in developing countries. The device will consist of a first stage particulate filter and a second stage germicidal ultraviolet (UV) chamber and be powered by a hand crank. The compact unit will be affordable (less than $25), will filter and purify 500mL of contaminated water in less than two minutes, and kill 99.999% of viruses, bacteria, and parasites. The device will also be simple to use and a practical solution for individuals with minimal operational knowledge of the device.
We will invent a portable lightning predictor and detector (LightPAD) to be used both domestically and internationally. The LightPAD will utilize a electric field mill and a radio frequency detection device, working in tandem through the use of a micro-controller interface. The inputs from these multiple sensors will alert users to high-probability conditions for lightning within ten minutes of a strike. The LightPAD will cost less than $200 and be simple to use.
